Harpers took the runners-up spot in the annual Ctes du Rhne quiz night in London last week. Each team member demonstrated an unlikely (and unhealthy) amount of knowledge on subjects as diverse as Giant Haystacks, Pocahontas and tiddlywinks.

FESTIVE FIZZ

Selfridges will be stocking the Champagne Taittinger Cool-Air tube this Christmas. The tube, which has been created specially for Taittinger's Brut Rserve NV Cuve, keeps chilled bottles cool for up to four hours. The Cool-Air tube was developed by packaging company Robinson and is made of recycled cardboard. The Taittinger pack retails for 33.50.

I don't know about that. Why, because we have more space, should Michelin prefer it? Some people say you need more flunkeys in the dining room or lavish decoration to make them happy. Certainly buying next door has given us the room between tables that you don't often get these days. Or if you do have the land mass, then the tables are turned.

Violence mars Beaujolais Nouveau celebrations

More than 30 people were injured when this year's Beaujolais Nouveau festivities in Grenoble turned sour.
The incident is believed to be unconnected to recent riots in Parisian suburbs, during which thousands of vehicles were set ablaze. The violence in Grenoble started on Friday, where between 2,000 and 3,000 students had been celebrating the launch of this year's Beaujolais Nouveau.

KJ is the Masters

Kendall-Jackson has moved into sports sponsorship with a tie-up with golden oldies' tennis tournament The Masters. The company's Vintner's Reserve is an associate sponsor and the official wine of the tournament, which is to be held at London's Royal Albert Hall from 29 November to 4 December.

Paragon takes Michel Picard

Paragon Vintners has announced an agreement to represent the wines of Burgundy producer Michel Picard.
Among the company's assets are Chteau de Chassagne Montrachet (the company HQ), Domaine Voarick in Mercurey, and Chteau de Daveney in Montagny. In total, it controls around 100 hectares of vines. This is the first time it has been represented in the UK.

Christmas sparkling price war begins

Sainsbury's and Tesco have both joined in the sub-10 Champagne price war, as predicted in our news feature on discounting champagne (see pp.23-24). Sainsbury's has slashed the single-bottle price of Etienne Dumont by 10 a bottle to 9.99 (until 29 November), or to 9.49 if you buy six bottles or more; and in a parallel move, Tesco has cut Andr Carpentier from 19.99 to 9.99, also 9.49 if you buy six bottles or more.
