Guy Woodward: The debate dividing Napa Valley vintners

Published:  12 July, 2018

Driving down the bucolic Highway 29 last month, on my way into Napa Valley, I was confronted by a series of roadside placards. As the vineyards became more prevalent, so did the signs. “No on C” most of them read. “Yes on C” read a few. But what the hell was C?

Tim Atkin MW: Sorry Mr Parker, but the world has moved on

Published:  06 July, 2018

Robert Parker is one of the most talked about and divisive individuals in the world of wine. Now into his seventies and the twilight of his career, he still has the power to ignite heated discussions – even if his sway over the wineries, domaines and châteaux that once trembled before his judgments has largely vanished.

Jerry Lockspieser: Selling equity in your business - great for growth or dancing with the devil?

Published:  26 June, 2018

Much is being written these days about consumers wanting authenticity, honesty and transparency in the products they buy, and the companies they buy them from. The news from across the drinks aisle that craft brewer Beavertown has sold an undisclosed minority stake to corporate giant Heineken for £40m raises interesting questions in this arena.

Guy Woodward: Are sommeliers followers or leaders?

Published:  11 June, 2018

It had been a long day. The panel discussion, as they are wont to do, had dragged on. The moderators, as they are even more wont to do, had dominated. And, at the back of the room, having negotiated a full day of the London Wine Fair, and sat quietly through an hour-long debate (Wine & Dine: How chefs, restaurateurs and sommeliers build their wine lists), Ben Drury was mad as hell. And he wasn’t going to take it any more.

Tim Atkin MW: Where wines really come from doesn’t matter to many

Published:  01 June, 2018

I’ve never been to the Phantom River in New Zealand’s South Island, but a quick search online shows that it rises in the Ben McLeod Range and joins the Orari River close to Peel Forest. With its echoes of nature, mystery and the gold rush, it’s a wonderful name for a Sauvignon Blanc brand. Punters clearly think so too, as Phantom River is currently selling several million bottles at £5 in Sainsbury’s.

Published:  25 May, 2018

“Business leaders can no longer assume that consumers make rational decisions about which products to buy and use. Today’s empowered customers no longer purchase products; they buy experiences. They engage with brands that deliver what they need, when they need it, regardless of the delivery mechanism or channel.

Guy Woodward: Who is wine for?

Published:  11 May, 2018

Two months ago, I wrote a column on Majestic that was less than effusive in its appraisal of the UK’s biggest drinks retailer. The day after it was published, I received a phone call from the firm’s chief executive Rowan Gormley. It’s funny how our reliance on electronic forms of communication means that an unsolicited call now has added impact – a fact which I’m sure Gormley had in mind as he opened the call with a jokey threat of legal action.

Jerry Lockspeiser: Are we in the wine business or the business of wine?

Published:  27 April, 2018

Barely 50% of UK start-ups make it to their third birthday (ONS figures). 20% of American businesses fail before they are one year old, around half make it to five years, and just 30% are still going after a decade (USA Today).
