Somerset’s Stony Street House taps into sustainability

Published:  20 February, 2019

Frome in Somerset now has its first dedicated wine bar and wine shop, with a focus on sustainability and wines on tap.

The glass-fronted bar, with a lounge and all-day dining area upstairs, comes from the founder of Beckford Bottle Shop, Kent Barker. While coffee, small plates and pizza are all part of the offering at Stony Street House, it’s the wine that’s the star of the show here. The list is 350-strong, starting at £6.50 each, with a flat corkage fee of £10 per bottle on the wine shop prices. The offering covers wine regions around the world, with a focus on the Mediterranean. In addition to the extensive selection, ten wines are available on tap too.

“Finding such great quality wines available in this new method of delivery was incredibly exciting,” Sarah Helliwell, head of wine, told Harpers. “The orange wine we have on tap is really something to behold.”

Stony Street House’s green credentials go beyond wine – there’s no single-use plastic on site, and plans for zero food waste too, not to mention the strong selection of sustainable, organic and biodynamic wines.

“Sustainability is really important for us, both for the fact that customers are demanding more traceability and accountability in the wines they buy, but also because we really believe that these wines are the best example of great winemaking, and a new interpretation of having regard for a sense of place in wine,” explained Helliwell.
