Organic Winegrowers NZ introduces annual wine week

Published:  18 July, 2018

Organic Winegrowers New Zealand (OWNZ) has announced it is introducing an annual Organic Wine Week.

Taking place 17 to 23 September this year incorporating the Southern Hemisphere spring equinox, the week has been designed to celebrate the “breadth and quality” of organic wine from the country, said the industry body.

Events will run across New Zealand and around Europe and will be consumer-focused.

European events will include a masterclass with organic winemakers at New Zealand Winegrowers headquarters in London; a consumer tasting at the New Zealand Cellar (London); NZ organic wine list focus at key restaurants (London); and an organic showcase at New Zealand Winegrowers tasting events (Warsaw and Hamburg).

Activities taking place in New Zealand during the week will include restaurants hosting special events with organic winemakers, while retailers will host public organic wine tastings.

“The objectives are simple: to showcase the impressive number and calibre of New Zealand organic wine producers, and to educate consumers on why choosing organic wine is great for both them and our landscapes,” said OWNZ.

With 10% of the country’s wineries currently holding an organic certification, organic producers occupied a “proud and growing place” in New Zealand wine, it added.

“The intention is to build momentum each year to become a global fixture.”

Organic Winegrowers New Zealand is an incorporated society with 180 members, with 65 wineries currently producing certified organic wine. Members range from boutique and family-owned through to large scale.
