M&S targets health conscious consumers with low calorie wine trio

Published:  19 October, 2017

Marks & Spencer has joined forces with South African winery Journey’s End to produce a low calorie wine.

The 8.5% abv Sumika range, which is available now in Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz and Rosé variants, contains 63 calories per 125ml glass - at least 30% less than standard wines, claimed the retailer.

The trio, which comes with a £7.50 price tag per bottle, is made using “clever blending and space age spinning cone technology”, which M&S said helped the wine retain it’s character and flavour despite its lower abv and calorie content.

“As we’ve seen in our Foodhalls, customers are increasingly aware of their calories and are looking for options which fit into with their lifestyles, yet don’t compromise on the quality or flavour,” said M&S winemaker Sue Daniels.

It had taken a while to “perfect the balance” of Sumika, means ‘light’ in Japanese, she added.
