In case you missed some of the headlines this week on harpers.co.uk, we have put together a review of the top online news, Q&As, and opinion stories.

Most Read: The extent of a "sophisticated and prolific" London-based fraud operation is still only just coming to light. A whisky dealer in the captial was arrested this week after a foiled counterfeiting operation showed how an individual had been profiting from refilling of hundreds of old and rare spirits bottles with much younger liquids. 

A favourable rand/sterling exchange rate has helped sales of premium South African wine, but bulk wine to the UK has progressively declined over the past two years, as has packaged volume. 

Elswhere, new data showed that the UK has resisted a sharp decline in spirits sales across western Europe. 

     

     

    Analysis and insights: We took another look at the gin category ahead of our Think Gin event on March 7, exploring how gin has entered a bold new era of marketing in which brands aren't identified by their name or packaging but by their ingredients.

    We also looked at the surge in interest in quality Portuguese wines and how Shop Rioja - the promotional campaign from Wines from Rioja - fared in UK indies last year.
