Wines of Rioja looking to crown a 'Rioja retailer of the year'

There's still time to enter Wines from Rioja campaign for independent retailers, which runs throughout October.

The 'Shop Rioja' campaign, which is free to enter, is dedicated to raising the profile and awareness of the quality and diversity of wines from one of Spain's most well-known regions.

To take part, retailer need to have five Rioja producers represented throughout the duration of the promotion in October, including at least one white Rioja. The initiative is being supported by Wines of Rioja, who have created bespoke point of sale materials to support sales . There will be a targeted social media campaign that will include the hastag #RiojaWine.

As well as running dedicated Rioja tastings and events, independent and online retailers are being encourage to come up with creative ways to promote Rioja to be get the chance to win £1,000 towards new Rioja listings and the chance to be crowned "Rioja retailer of the year."

There will be one winner for the smaller merchants category (from one to three stores) and a winner for larger merchants who have between four and 15 stores.

Global sales of Rioja wine grew by five million bottles in 2014, hitting a record 281 million litres of wine sold last year, and Rioja was one of only three major wine producing regions showing gains in the off-trade, according to the Wilson Drinks Report up 10%. Earlier this year the Designated of Origin (DOC) said the 2014 harvest was likely to good, with higher volumes than in 2013.
