Hallgarten Druitt has been named the best on-trade wine distributor in the UK in a comprehensive survey of thousands of outlets across the country.

The report, from Wine Business Solutions, looked at the performance of the top 30 companies and also covered subjects including the most successful brands, the most listed wine styles and the effectiveness of different distribution models.

The biggest distributors were ranked according to factors such as the number of listings they achieved; the number of listings per brand; the number of by the glass offerings as a percentage of the wine list and the number of alternative formats such as magnum and half bottles.

While Matthew Clark had the biggest number of total listings at 838, followed by Enotria and then Bibendum, Hallgarten Druitt was named the best on-trade distributor overall. "Suppliers working with them can expect good distribution and plenty of by-the-glass pouring", said a WBS spokesman.

Yorkshire-based Merchant Vintners, Christopher Piper in Devon and Wine World of Cornwall were all named as exceptional regional based wholesalers. Lea and Sandeman and Justerini & Brooks (Diageo) were named as the best at brand building via by the glass pouring."Our crème de la crème award for the tightest, highest quality portfolio goes to John E Fells, unsurprisingly some might say," added WBS.

The report found that as a percentage of total listings by country in the on-trade, France led the way with a 45% share, followed by Italy at 14% and Australia and Spain both on 9%.
