Codorníu, the UK's number one branded Spanish sparkling wine, is set to elevate the average price of their wines with the launch of Reina Maria Cristina, now on limited release in the UK.

Codorníu Reina Maria Cristina will fight for a Spanish slice of the premium sparkling wine market with a recommended retail price of £17.99.

Bill Breen, Managing Director for Codorníu UK, comments: "Codorníu has long recognised the need for premium sparkling wines with a strong consumer proposition.

"We see huge potential for further category growth in encouraging consumers to trade up from the sub £10 market to products such as Reina Maria Cristina.

"Spanish sparkling wine has something very special to offer the UK consumer and our motivation is to offer supreme value over the category leader.

"We will be shouting louder about Codorníu's Spanish heritage and sparkling winemaking credentials while helping consumers understand the quality distinctions in traditional method sparkling wine."

Codorníu Reina Maria Cristina has been launched in response to growing market demand for high quality sparkling wines.

Sparkling wine is a buoyant and dynamic category. Most recent stats put UK growth at +5.1%, this is ahead of beer, still wines and spirits.

Globally, non-champagne sparkling wine sales rose by +4.3% in 2007 to reach 166.7m nine-litre cases. Value sales are growing ahead of volume, demonstrating that consumers are trading up.

Codorníu Reina Maria Cristina Reserva Vintage 2006 is a traditional method sparkling wine born of careful vineyard selection from two wine regions with different soil and climate: Macabeo/Parellada/Xarel.Lo from D.O. Penedès and Chardonnay from D.O. Costers del Segre.

This exquisite sparkling wine is a single vintage reserva, meaning it has undergone a minimum of fifteen months ageing in order to develop its complex character and depth of flavour.

Codorníu Reina Maria Cristina was created to honour of the Regent Queen Maria Cristina of Spain, who in 1897 granted Codorníu the title of 'purveyor to the Spanish Royal Household''.

This exceptional wine defines Codorníu's historic expertise as Spain's leading 'método tradicional'' producer.

The distinctive gothic bottle shape, indicative of Codorniu's premium sparkling range, provides significant stand-out on shelf. Codorníu Reina Maria Cristina is also available in a regal blue, specially created gift box, providing strong quality cues to consumers in the run up to Christmas.

Breen adds, "Codorníu is investing heavily in winery and viticulture innovation and the appointment of new winemaker Bruno Colomer Martí earlier this year heralds the start of an exciting new phase for the company."
