As success stories go, you would be hard-pressed to beat the extraordinary rise of Argentinian Malbec. Representing just under a quarter of the country’s grape harvest, it accounts for almost three-quarters of its wine exports by volume, with the UK and USA its primary markets. Few consumers would realise, or even care, that the grape hails from France, because, to most, Malbec means Argentina. It’s a simple shorthand that serves as a powerful marketing tool in a challenging market. But is its mono-varietal dominance eclipsing the blends in which it plays an important partnering role and are other grapes deserving of more attention?
