Ridgeview earns Gold for Sustainable Practices in Wine Production
After nearly 30 years of producing award-winning wines, Ridgeview, a leading English sparkling wine producer, has been awarded gold by Sustainable Wines of Great Britain (SWGB).
The recognition highlights Ridgeview’s commitment to preserving land, nurturing vines and maintaining the South Downs in Sussex, where the estate is based.
Ridgeview has played a crucial role in the emergence of English wine over the last three decades, winning numerous awards. As the first B Corp-certified wine estate in England, Ridgeview remains committed to eco-conscious winemaking, ensuring the winery operates sustainably.
Sustainable Wines of Great Britain, established in 2020, promotes sustainability through a rigorous certification process and a community of like-minded producers.
Matt Strugnell, vineyard manager, said: “Long-term. Longevity. Sustained. That’s what we’re trying to achieve. Gaining our gold SWGB certification means that we can say with authority that our vineyard is sustainable – one that will keep doing the business for many years.”
The estate’s sustainable practices, recognised by SWGB, include gentle pruning techniques that align with the natural tendencies of some of the oldest vines in the country, ensuring their preservation.
The vineyard team also focuses on enhancing microbial life in the soil while protecting the natural habitat. Year-round ground cover is maintained in mature vineyards to prevent soil erosion, improve water retention, and promote biodiversity, which creates a vibrant ecosystem.
A diverse range of plants is also cultivated within the vineyard to support a healthy environment for both the vineyard and its surroundings. As a result, Ridgeview has eliminated herbicide use, with the vineyard herbicide-free for over two years. Increasing organic soil matter to improve fertility and structure remains a focus for the future.
