Symingtons buy Rio Torto estate

Published:  23 July, 2008

The Symington family has acquired Quinta do Bom Retiro Pequeno - a 46-hectare estate in the premium Rio Torto valley area - and will be adding it to its Warre's Port stable of properties.
The estate was bought by the Serodio family in 1935 and has contributed a significant amount of wine to every declared Warre's vintage since. It also contributes to the Warre's Bottle matured LBV.

A spokesperson for the Symingtons said: The wines from Bom Retiro Pequno complement perfectly the wines from Warre's other main vineyard, Quinta da

Cavadinha in the Pinho valley, which is at a slightly higher altitude and produces fresh, elegant wines.'

The purchase brings the Symington's premium vineyard holdings to 19 individual quintas. The spokesperson added: The estate amounts to 46 hectares, with 34 hectares planted to 137,280 vines, of which 79% are very old. It is one of the most photographed vineyards in the entire Douro, as the terraces there are of outstanding beauty.

The yields are very low and the concentration of the wines outstanding. All the Ports

made on the quinta are produced in five traditional stone lagares.'
