Co-op claims UK first with Lebanese Fairtrade wine

Published:  05 December, 2017

The Co-op has claimed a UK first with the launch of Côteaux les Cèdres - the first wine from Lebanon and the Middle-East to have both Fairtrade and organic certifications.

Available from the retailer now, Côteaux les Cèdres comes with a £11.99 price tag with the stock from the first order from The Co-op funding a large fresh water tank - a project that will help tackle the water shortages faced by Lebanese communities.

Demonstrating a better way of doing business and commitment to longstanding supplier relationships, the launch would build on the continued growth of Fairtrade wine in the UK, said The Co-op.

“As a pioneer of Fairtrade, we are thrilled to add this wonderful wine to our Fairtrade range, broadening our ethical wine offering and playing a role in helping growers in Lebanon,” said Fairtrade wine buyer, Edward Robinson.

Sarah Singer, wine supply chain manager at the Fairtrade Foundation, said: “It is fantastic to see the first Fairtrade Lebanese wine on sale in the UK - thanks to the sale of this wine producers and workers in Lebanon will benefit from a better price as well as the additional Fairtrade Premium."

The ongoing support of retailers like The Co-op was vital to continue Fairtrade wine growth in the UK, she added.

The Co-op claims to be the world leader in Fairtrade wine sales with 33% global share.
