Italy confirms crisis distillation

Published:  23 July, 2008

In a recent ministerial meeting, the Italian government has requested EU permission and subsequent funding to distil 3-4 million hectolitres of table wine.

The Italian request followed a meeting at the end of April 2005, where Spain was granted funding to distil 4 million hectolitres of table wine and France 2 million hectolitres of VQPRD wine. Italy is hoping for an official reply from the EU by mid-July. Our last request for "Distillazione di Crisi" was put through in 2000,' said Giuseppe Martelli, MD of the Associazione Enologici Enotecnici Italiani, who was at both meetings.

Martelli added that the market was improving: Compared to the first three months of 2004, exports are up by 7% in value and 10.7% in volume for 2005, while ex-cellar prices, according to ISMEA (statistical researchers) are down by an average of 3,4%, which has helped to increase Italy's export market of entry level wines.'
