The Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) has reported a record number of candidates taking its examinations around the world in the last academic year, with 48,434 students, a 12% increase over the previous year.
The WSET now has students taking courses in 62 countries and at all qualification levels, from level one to WSET Diploma level. The UK, despite being the original and oldest market for WSET, continues to show continued growth and is still the largest market for the educational program.
"The fact that we are still seeing solid growth here bodes well in my view for the future of the UK trade," said Ian Harris, the WSET's chief executive.
Mainland China is now the second largest market and has shown the biggest growth since last year with the US remaining the third largest market.
"Ten years ago, WSET's candidate numbers were just over 10,000 per annum. To have achieved almost five-fold growth since, and through a period of the global economic uncertainty, is a great achievement," said Laura Jewell MW, chairman of WSET's Board of Trustees.
WSET is looking to continue to expand and is in the process of offering courses in 17 new languages.
