HARDY'S HEADS FOR THE REGIONS

Published:  23 July, 2008

BRL Hardy has unveiled a range of wines from Western Australia as part of its Regional Wine Portfolio. The Houghton GI (as in Geographical Indication') range has been developed by Houghton's chief winemaker, Larry Cherubino, and is said to reflect the differing sub-regions within Western Australia. The range comprises: Pemberton Chardonnay (13.99) and Sauvignon Blanc (9.99), Frankland River Riesling (9.99), Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon, Pemberton Merlot and Frankland River Shiraz (all 14.99). Cherubino told Harpers: Western Australia represents only 1-2% of Australia's total production, but 26% of its premium wine. People know Margaret River Chardonnay, but they don't necessarily know all the other styles. We are looking at the expression of personality and different interpretations.' He added, We have got, in Western Australia, vineyards that make some of the best varietal statements.' BRL Hardy recently opened a 6,000 ton capacity winery in Nannup, near Pemberton, which will process all of the company's premium grapes and the majority of its red wine.
