Gerard Basset, owner and founder of the hotel TerraVina, Hampshire has been awarded the title of World's Best Sommelier.
Basset MW, MS, beat Paolo Basso of Switzerland, who took second place, and David Biraud of France at the competition that took place in Santiago de Chile.
It was his 6th time in the competition and fourth time Basset had competed in the finals.
Basset said on the Wines of Chile website: "I've been preparing six hours a day for the last year and a half. But it's not just me. My wife and co-workers and my whole team have been helping me prepare for this!" The real winner here today is my wife.
Other winners in this year's competition include Iulia Gosea, of Romania, who won the Acqua Panna & San Pellegrino water competition, and Véronique Rivest, of Canada, who takes home the Peter Lehman Shiraz award.
