The Mazzei family, owners of Castello di Fonterutoli - one of Chianti Classico's top Tuscan estates and the producer of the SuperTuscan Siepi - has recently expanded its new property, Tenuta di Belguardo, in Morellino di Scansano. Tenuta di Belguardo, originally a 35 hectare (ha) estate situated in the Maremma hills, between L'Ucellina and Montiano, was purchased in 1997. The recent e5 million investment includes an additional 40ha and a new winery. By 2005 we plan to expand our vineyard capacity to 60 hectares of vines,' said Francesco Mazzei. We're aiming at producing a high-profile wine, a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon with a touch of other red varieties. Our debut will be this month, with 7,000 bottles of 2000 IGT Maremma Tenuta di Belguardo.' According to Mazzei, Tenuta di Belguardo's complexity and elegance is encouraged by the area's microclimate, which is influenced by the proximity of the sea. The 7,000 bottles of Tenuta di Belguardo have already been sold. However, Mazzei aims to gradually increase production to 200,000 bottles by 2010.
