Barossa Valley producer Torbreck Vintners has appointed John E Fells as its UK importer.

The move to Fells comes after Torbreck's existing UK importer, Hayman Barwell & Jones (HBJ) was bought by Essex-based wine and spirit distributor Coe Vintners in January.

Steve Moody, sales and marketing director for Fells said: "We have known Torbreck at a distance for the past four years and the demise of HBJ brought a deal forward."

The winery has concentrated on on-trade sales and this focus is likely to remain. Moody added: "We will try to build distribution in the on-trade but also be looking at high quality retailers and independent merchants. Torbreck also produces wines for Marks & Spencer and we hope to build on this."

David Powell, managing director and chief winemaker of Torbreck Vintners, said: " We are delighted to be joining the Fells portfolio of world-renowned family-owned wineries; we are confident that their proven success in developing luxury wine brands will provide the perfect platform for Torbreck in the key UK market."

Torbreck's production has grown from 400 cases in 1995 to 65,000 cases in 2008.
