The purchasing age of alcohol in stores could be raised in Jersey after ministers said they are concerned about the social problems associated with drinking.

A green paper has been created on the Channel Island by politicians who said they are particularly worried by the behaviour of people in St Helier, reports the Jersey Evening Post.

Under the proposed regulations, both retailers and youths purchasing drink could be hit with bigger penalties when caught breaking the law.

Home Affairs Minister Wendy Kinnard revealed the plans in response to questioning by fellow politician Kevin Lewis, who asked what measures are being taken to combat regular problems linked with misuse of alcohol.

In Scotland, opposition has been witnessed following similar plans by the government there to increase the purchasing age of alcohol to the age of 21.

Asda shoppers rejected the possible developments saying they would not solve the issue, while the Scottish Grocers' Federation said that such a universal rule would be unfair on retailers.
