A person calling himself James Harris contacted French wine producer Le Conte des Floris via email claiming to work for Berkmann, which he does not.

The original name in the sender box was Franck Brown (brown.franck@yahoo.co.uk).

Berkmann said the person seems to be attempting to pass himself off as a representative of the wine trade, and purchase commercial quantities of wine on credit.

The alleged attempted scam is similar to one used by a fraudster who struck Stratford's recently.

Dinesh Changela, Berkmann md said: "The pattern is very similar to that in the Stratford's case - he quotes our head office address and company registration number on his correspondence, along with an unrelated UK mobile telephone and fax number."

Berkmann said that if anyone is unsure as to the credentials of a purchaser using Berkmann's details then they should contact them for verification.
