An international wine trust formed to benefit the new Wine Research Centre at the University of British Columbia has launched the Chardonnay of the Century - Million Dollar Challenge', with a $1 million cash purse open to both wineries and private wine collectors. The search for the Chardonnay of the Century' will take place in Vancouver in September and the panel of judges will be headed by John Avery MW and Steven Spurrier. The organisers say that the panel will apply internationally accepted judging standards to a meticulous evaluation process'. Using the Davis System', marks will be awarded for colour and appearance (three), nose and aroma (seven), and palate (ten). Along with the $1 million in cash prizes for the top wines, trophies and recognition will be awarded in several categories. Wineries and collectors may submit wines from now until 5 July. If both a winery and a collector submit the same wine, the winery's submission will take precedence. On 6 July, all collector entries that are not duplicated by a winery will be accepted. Early entry fees are still available until 30 April.
