Fine wine sales rocket at BB&R

Published:  23 July, 2008

Sales of fine wine have jumped at Berry Bros. & Rudd (BB&R) since the Hong Kong authorities ditched duty on alcohol.

Simon Staples, company sales director, said his team had sold more fine wine in the last two days than they had in the whole of the previous two months.

He added: "I don't think I can recall a busier day in 11 years."

John Tsang, Hong Kong financial secretary, announced last month (February) that wine, beer and all other alcoholic drinks bar spirits are now exempt from Hong Kong duty rates - as a result BB&R dropped its wine prices by an average of 22%.
