Leading Austrian winemaker dies, aged 48

Published:  23 July, 2008

One of Austria's leading sweet wine producers, Alois Kracher, has died from cancer aged 48.

Based in Burgenland, he was named "White Winemaker of the Year" in 1994 at the International Wine Challenge, a title he took on six occasions.

Austria's wine marketing board said: "Austria has lost an irreplaceable visionary, not only because his wines achieved so much international success, but also because of his dedication and service to Austrian wines around the world."

His 26-year-old son, Gerhard, will take over the work at the Illmitz winery.
