9-litre Ornellaia sells for 16,000

A Salmanazar, or 9-litre bottle of Ornellaia 2005 has sold for 16,200 ($33,600) at Christie's in New York.
The large sum paid for an what is in effect an en primeur wine was helped by its billing as an anniversary wine. It is 20 years since the establishment of the Tenuta dell'Ornellaia.
A couple from Seattle bought the lot after just 40 seconds of bidding, with a high bid placed early to secure the wine.
Tenuta dell'Ornellaia will dedicate the sum to the restoration of a bronze statue above one of the doors of Florence's baptistery.
