Rioja is the wine region most likely to convert consumer awareness into sales
Rioja is recognised as a wine region by two-thirds of UK wine drinkers, and almost half of these had purchased wines from the region in the past three months.
A survey by Wine Inelligence Vinitirac reveals the recognition and consequent purchasing of Rioja puts it ahead of Bordeaux and Burgundy when it comes to consumer awareness.
The results are backed by Nielsen statistics showing a 7% volume increase and a 11% value increase in sales of Rioja over the past two years, out-performing Spain as a whole.
Rioja wines command an average off-trade price of 5.19 per bottle.
Stats from the Rioja Growers and Exporters Group for the two year ending August 2007 show particularly strong growth in the high quality Reserva (+57%), gran Reserva (+48%) and Crianza wines (+18%).
