Pub wine festival won't educate drinkers

Published:  23 July, 2008

Having increased sales by 45% during its first wine festival, pub chain J D Wetherspoon is holding its second.

Until 24 June, Wetherspoon has added six wines to the 16 currently listed from New Zealand Pinot Noir to Puligny Montrachet.

It has also linked up with the Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET), which already trains its staff, to offer tutored wine tastings in some pubs, but a spokesman from Wetherspoon, said: "It's not our job to educate the consumer but to get people to try wines they'll buy again."

He added that pubs were still not associated with decent wines and this was a change to show it took wines seriously.

"We've got the buying power to stock decent wines but we want to take away the snobbishness that people associate with wine."
