UK to be top EU spenders by 2010

Published:  23 July, 2008

UK wine drinkers will spend more on still and sparkling wine than any other European country by 2010, according to new research from Vinexpo.

The French wine and spirits fair, which will be held from 17-21 June this year, commissioned the research, which was carried out by IWSR.

It forecasts that by 2010, sales in the UK will reach 5.496 billion (at current exchange rates), thereby leapfrogging the current leaders, France and Germany respectively.

In terms of wine consumption, this is expected to grow by 9.27%, and reach 13.736 million hectolitres (1.83 billion bottles). And the annual average growth in wine consumption between 2001 and 2010 is predicted to be 3.71%, which is three-and-a-half times faster than the rise in world consumption.

In the spirits market, sales in the UK are expected to fall by 10.34% between 2005 and 2010. Vodka is poised to claim top spot, with an annual growth forecast of 5.53% from 2001 to 2010, and a 2010 sales forecast of 8.4 million nine-litre cases.
