Six new MWs enter the fold

Six new members were admitted to the Institute of Masters of Wine (IMW) at its Annual Reception and Awards Ceremony on 2 November, bringing the overall membership to 250.

The newcomers have diverse backgrounds. Susan Hulme MW runs the wine education company, Vintuition; Carmel Kilcline MW started off in biotechnology but moved into the wine sector with roles at Sainsbury's and Diageo; Sarah Marsh MW specialises in Burgundy and Pinot Noir, producing a Burgundy newsletter with Clive Coates MW; Fergal Tynan MW is MD of Boutinot's new world division, Capricorn Wines; Cathy van Zyl MW is the first South African-based member of the Institute; Jean Wareing MW entered the wine trade with Morris & Verdin and is now marketing manager for Boutinot.

At the same event, Stephen Skelton - head buyer at Thameside Wines - was presented with The Noval Award for Communication for his contribution to the knowledge of wine enthusiasts, ranging from MW students to customers of Thameside Wines, and also for his achievements in publicising the work of English vineyards.

Siobhan Turner, IMW's executive director, said of the evening: As one person said, the sign of a good party is when you have to remove people from the premises! We had about 100 people there in all.'
