Wine consumption in the UK has risen by almost a quarter in the past five years, according to research group Mintel. This 23% uplift in consumption contrasts sharply with former wine-drinking stalwarts Italy, France and Germany, which have seen consumption drop 2%, 6% and 11% respectively.
According to Hanna Kivimaki, the report's author, this trend looks set to continue: In France and Germany, the cultural Zeitgeist seems to be moving towards healthier lifestyles and away from alcohol consumption.'
The report attributes wine's growth spurt in the UK to an increase in female drinkers, consumers adopting more continental drinking habits',
a trend towards entertaining at home' and a massive promotional push from suppliers and retailers'.
