Compañia Vinicola del Norte de España (CVNE) has ventured outside Rioja for the first time with the purchase of Cava D.O. producer Roger Goulart.
The Penedès (Catalonia) based winery joins the CVNE portfolio of four separate Rioja wineries - Cune, Imperial, Vina Real and Contino, with Hatch Mansfield appointed UK distributor of Roger Goulart Gran Cuvée Gran Reserva 2011 in from April this year (rrp: £20.15).
Founded in 1882 by the Canal family and located in Sant Esteve Sesrovires, Roger Goulart only produces Cavas and was one of the first wineries to produce traditional method sparkling wine.
Using predominately the local Xarel.lo grape variety, the wines are made for ageing and do so in their own underground cellars.
The plan was to keep the historical and cultural legacy of the winery alive, said CVNE.
“We’ve been looking at wineries outside of Rioja for a while and are thrilled to announce that Roger Goulart will join our portfolio, “ said CEO Victor Urrutia.
CVNE is one of the oldest wineries in Rioja but remains firmly in family control. Founded by brothers, Eusebio and Raimundo Real de Asúa, in Haro, Rioja, in 1879, it has been expanded within the region and now has two other wineries in the Rioja Alavesa sub-region, namely Viña Real (founded 1920) and Viñedos del Contino (founded 1973).
Hatch Mansfield is the sole UK agent for CVNE wines.
