Townsend, who had worked in the drinks trade for the past 30 years, died in California nine days ago on a work trip. He was 53.
During his six years with TWE, Townsend had become "highly regarded and deeply respected", not just by the European team but across the global business as an "inspirational and much loved leader", said ceo Michael Clarke.
"Our deepest condolences go out to Dan's family and loved ones," said Clarke, adding Dan had been a role model for many and would continue to be "a big part of our business".
"This is an incredibly sad time for our entire business, in particular for our UK and European teams."
During his career in the drinks trade, Townsend worked across different categories and channels, from the like of Scottish Courage to executive roles at Matthew Clark, Constellation Europe and Louis Latour.
During his past two years with TWE, Townsend was also the chairman of drinks industry charity The Benevolent, helping raise substantial funds for members of the trade in need of support.
