Published:  23 July, 2008

Californian wine pioneer Robert Mondavi has been honoured by the government of France as a chevalier of l'Ordre National de la Lgion d'Honneur (Legion of Honour).

The medal was given to him by Jean-David Levitte, French ambassador to the US, at a ceremony held at Opus One in Napa last month.

According to a French government spokesman, Mondavi was given the award due to his endeavour to establish strong ties between the French and Californian wine industries in an indisputable contribution to the strengthening of the longstanding relationship and friendship between France and the United States.'

Levitte added: Early on, Robert Mondavi recognised that the French and Californian industries would benefit from a strong relationship and sharing of ideas.'
