A trio of John Armit employees has joined forces to set up a new independent wine merchant, Clarion Wines, selling to private, corporate and institutional buyers.
According to its founders - Richard Berkley-Matthews, Ian Paveley and Patrick Barran - it will distribute a wide range of wines from around the world.
Berkley-Matthews joined the wine trade in 1991 and has worked as a buyer for Laytons Wine Merchants and John Armit Wines. Paveley joined the wine trade in 1992 and has worked for the Conran Group, Bibendum and John Armit Wines, selling to a large network of private customers. Barran has been in the wine business since 1987, during which time he has worked for Grants of St James, Bibendum and John Armit Wines, selling to corporate and institutional buyers. Clarion Wines therefore has a combined wine trade experience of some 45 years.
We embark with the simple aim of running an efficient and highly personal business offering the best wines available, at fair prices, to any wine buyer who wishes to avoid the large, impersonal corporate selling machines that increasingly dominate the trade,' said Berkley-Matthews.
