Wetz back at Unwins

Published:  23 July, 2008

Around 10% of Unwins stores are to close and 33 head office positions will be made redundant, following a restructuring of the company.

Some 41 of the group's stores will close their doors as part of the move, which will see Unwins split into four new divisions - with former MD Phillip Wetz in charge of one of them.

Unwins will continue to operate 382 stores in the south-east of England; Phillips Newman & Co is the brands division, of which Wetz has been appointed chief executive; PN Wholesale is the

drinks wholesale operation; and UDS is the group's logistics division.

Purchasing director David Armstrong will leave the group, and the store closures will inevitably lead to the loss of more jobs.

Group chairman Phillip Cook said that certain decisions were not taken lightly', although he added that the priority was to get Unwins back on track as quickly as possible'.
