Leading Australian wine brand Jacob's Creek is launching two new icon wines - a Riesling and a Shiraz - at this year's LIWSF. The wines, 2002 Steingarten Riesling and 1999 Centenary Hill Shiraz, are established in the Australian market under the Orlando label, but will be moved to provide a halo' for the Jacob's Creek brand itself and will now benefit from international distribution and an increase in production as a result. Bringing them under Jacob's Creek the brand has safeguarded the wines' future and enabled investment to increase the potential of the brands, which would never have come if they had stayed as Orlando wines', said Nick Blair, European general manager at Orlando, although he added that neither wines will ever be volume opportunities'. All the grapes for Jacob's Creek Steingarten are from Eden Valley, with the majority from the densely planted (1.2m x 1.2m), 40-year-old Steingarten' block, which, until recently, was the highest in the region. New plantings on the same hillside have been made to increase the brand's volume. The grapes for Centenary Hill are mostly sourced from an 80-year-old block of Shiraz in the Barossa. Steingarten is expected to retail for 28, with Centenary Hill at 39. Top-end retail and the on-trade' are targets for distribution.
