UK imports of Loire wines have jumped by one third

Total exports to the UK are up 33% by volume to 26,295 hectolitres and value has increased by 38%, making the UK the region's second largest market after the USA. Sparkling wine has done particularly well, growing by 123% by volume and 117% by value.

Globally exports are up 4% by volume and 11% by volume, according to the regional body which represents wine from Muscadet, Anjou, Saumur and Touraine.

The US is the biggest export market for the region's wines, and exports there have increased by 10% in volume and 17% in value.

White wine exports to the UK grew by 27% while red and rosés increased by 55%. In value terms whites have jumped 32%, while reds and rosés are up 61%.

The next biggest markets for Loire wines are Belgium and Germany which come in third and fourth places respectively. Belgium accounts for 15% total volume exports, but its exports have fallen by 15% in the first four months of 2014 compared to 2013. Germany, which accounts for 14% of total volume exports saw a slight (1%) volume increase. Germany is the third most important market by value, accounting for 13% of value exports (up 2% on 2013) while Belgium makes up 10% (flat).

Last week the Daily Telegraph's Hamish Anderson recommended three Loire wines to readers, including a 2013 Taste the Difference Muscadet, Sèvre et Maine Sur Lie, £7, from Sainsbury's; an M&S 2013 Sauvignon de Touraine, Domaine Jacky Marteau, £8.99 and 2007 Savennières Clos St Yves, Domaine Baumard, £16.99, from Hawkshead Wines.
