BULGARIAN 'FUNKY' WINE RANGE LAUNCHED

Published:  23 July, 2008

By Stuart Peskett

A quartet of Bulgarian wines from Stork Nest Estate has been launched in the UK by Winez Ltd. The Valley of the Roses range comprises a Cabernet Sauvignon Ros, a Chardonnay, a Merlot and a Cabernet Sauvignon. Head winemaker Linda Domas, who has also worked in her native Australia and in Tunisia, said that Bulgaria was a challenge, but an ultimately rewarding one: The winery in Bulgaria is adequate, but it's certainly not Wolf Blass. We made sure that hygiene was absolutely impeccable - with those old wineries, there's no reason why you can't make good wine, but you must make sure that the cellar is pristine, otherwise it will bite you. There is a flavour that is typically Bulgarian, a really funky character which you get across the range of wines. The Merlot in the south [of Bulgaria] is just beautiful, and Merlot, in my mind, is the strongest variety in Bulgaria.' The wines are available in most major multiples, all with an RRP of 3.99.
