The Portuguese Prime Minister, Pedro Passos Coelho, presented Paul Symington the Douro Personality of the Year award at a ceremony earlier this week.
Symington, who is chairman of Symington Family Estates, is the first Port industry figure to receive the honour in what is a new initiative led by the UTAD (University of Vila Real & Alto Douro) to recognise individuals and companies that have made significant contributions to the Douro region.
Symington said: "It is especially important to me that this award was decided by a jury composed of people from the Douro and other distinguished Portuguese individuals. Despite the current economic difficulties that we are facing, Port and the Douro and its wines will come through even stronger."
