Gonzalez Byass launches Fino Palmas Sherries range

Published:  19 October, 2011

Gonzalez Byass has launched a range of four classic Fino Palmas Sherries following the success of its Tio Pepe en rama.

The Palmas mark on a Fino cask, are highly prized for their aroma, flavour and abundance of flor.

Martin Skelton, managing director of Gonzalez Byass UK, says: "Following the success of our Tio Pepe en rama, an unfiltered bottling of Tio Pepe, we thought it might be interesting to bottle some Palmas sherries, effectively, each one is a more mature style of Tio Pepe.

"In each case we have selected only those Fino casks that were found to be most delicate and elegant, normally due to the continued presence of flor."

Skelton added for the Una Palma and Dos Palmas wines, six and eight years old respectively, it is still possible to find casks with the right conditions for great Palmas sherries and for the Tres Palmas, a ten year old Fino, it is very rare to find casks that still maintain a good covering of flor.

"The Cuatro Palmas wine is very rare, it is technically an Amontillado, but was a great Fino in its day, which retained its Flor long after other wines in the bodega, and has thus made, at 40 years of age, a stunning Amontillado wine.

"This wine is from our Museo Solera, of which we only have six casks; we have taken half a cask for this bottling."

The Palmas range will be available in the United Kingdom from November 2011.
