Independents in the UK on and off trades merchants can bag great wine bargains today and every Friday, as Harpers Wine & Spirit launches #winedealfriday on social network Twitter.

Jancis Robinson MW, Tim Atkin MW and Charles Metcalfe have given the campaign ringing endorsements, and will tweet about the scheme to their combined 51,000 followers.

Robinson has already tweeted this morning: "Harpers' #winedealfriday launch 2day. The hashtag is a carbon-free way to offer great wine deals to independent UK winemerchants on Fridays."

Metcalfe said: "I'm sure anything giving independents the chance to make offers to customers would be welcome."

The idea is that every Friday, wine stores log in to Twitter and search under #winedealfriday.

Traders will be plugging bold and exclusive deals there to attract the attention of independents, who can follow up to secure the special offers through direct messages on Twitter.

Hal Wilson, managing director of Cambridge Wine Merchants, said he would "look out for trade offers on #winedealfriday and pass them on to our customers".

To make the process even easier to navigate, Harpers Wine & Spirit will also showcase the top deals of the day at harpers.co.uk every Friday, as well as flagging them up in its Friday e-newsletter.
