The European Commission has axed plans to allow rosé wine to made by blending red and white.

The climb down marks a major victory for the French and Italian wine industry lobbies which had campaigned hard against the measure, designed to improve export opportunities for European producers.

EU Agriculture commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel said: "It's important that we listen to our producers when they are concerned about changes to the regulations.

"It's become clear over recent weeks that a majority in our wine sector believe that ending the ban on blending could undermine the image of traditional rosé."

Growers in strong rosé producing regions had argued that the end of the ban would have threatened traditional styles of rosé and led to production becoming industrialised.
