Two amateur French wine makers have died after being suffocated by the fumes from the grapes they were treading.
According to a report in the Daily Mail, the two victims, 48-year-old Daniel Moulin and 50-year-old Gerard Dachis, were overcome by carbon dioxide fumes after climbing into a six-foot wide vat to begin extracting the juice from the grapes.
The tragedy happened in France's Ardeche region. The volunteers were helping a friend to make wine on his small estate for family and friends in what is believed to have been a poorly-ventilated farm building.
The estate's owner and another friend were treated in hospital for inhaling carbonic gas.
