People aged 16 to 24 are drinking too much, with four in 10 men and a third of women drinking in excess of the recommended NHS guidelines;
187,640 people over 16 were sent to hospital in 2005/06 up from 89,380 a decade ago;
Almost 5,300 children under 16 were sent to hospital in 2005/06 up from 3,870 in 1996;
Alcohol caused the death of 6,570 people in 2005. Two thirds died from liver disease.
