The UK sparkling wine market is expected to grow faster than that of any other European country according to new research.
Vinexpo's study predicts that consumption of sparkling wine in Britain, including Champagne, will rise to 86.5 million litres by 2010 - representing a growth of 26% over five years.
In 2005, consumption stood at 62m litres, an increase of 45% from 47m litres in 2001. However, the UK represents only 4.3% of Europe's total sparkling wine consumption.
In the UK, sparkling wine growth is expected to increase faster than Champagne. In 2006, Champagne sales increased by 2.5% in volume to 23.3m litres (although shipments were down by 8%), and other sparkling wines by 7% to 45.1m litres.
