Own-label fizz beats big Champagne brands

Published:  23 July, 2008

Sainsbury's and Somerfield own-label Champagnes have taken top spot in a Which? magazine sparkling wine tasting.

Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Premier Cru Vintage 2000 (29.99) took top spot and was praised by the tasting panel for its elegance and class'. Somerfield's Prince William Premier Cru, RRP 14.99, took the Exceptional Value prize.

Six of the top 10 Champagnes were supermarket own-labels, with Lanson Black Label and Veuve Clicquot taking fourth and fifth place respectively.

However, Mot & Chandon's Brut Imperial came in 20th, beaten by all but two of the 16 Champagnes entered, as well as some much cheaper, sparkling wines, including a Co-op Cava.
