Waverley TBS buys into Wales

Published:  23 July, 2008

Wholesaler WaverleyTBS has announced that it is buying one of Wales' largest independent wholesalers, Cellar Wines Direct (CWD), based in Cardiff, for an undisclosed sum.

CWD sells and distributes a range of wines, beer, spirits and soft drinks to just under 600 on-trade customers in south Wales.

The managing director for CWD, Nigel O'Sullivan, retains his position, and the group will continue to trade as Cellar Wines Direct.

Customers currently using Waverley's distribution centre in Bristol will now be transferred to the Cardiff operation.

WaverleyTBS managing director, Jeff Jamet, said: The acquisition of Cellar Wines Direct is another step in our quest to achieve full national geographic coverage.

The acquisition gives us the opportunity to introduce our composite range to CWD's customers and will extend an improved service offering to our customers in Wales.'

This deal comes shortly after the purchase of another two independently owned drink wholesale businesses: Oak Brewery based in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire and Northern Ireland's biggest independent wholesaler, United Wine Merchants, based in Craigavon.

WaverleyTBS is owned by Scottish and Newcastle and currently operates via 20 regional depots.
