The Whisky Exchange has launched a Champagne event to ‘revive’ the category in the UK.
The Champagne Show, taking place next month, will showcase more than 100 Champagnes from producers from across the region and will feature masterclasses, stage demos, food pairings and pop-up bars.
The decision to launch the event, which will compliment The Whisky Exchange’s existing Whisky and Cognac shows, came on the back of Champagne having “lost its way a bit”, said the online drinks specialist.
“We have been debating it for the past 18 months as felt there’s a real lack of a Champagne show in the UK that does it really well and felt now was the right time to do it as there is a lot of talk about Prosecco and sparkling wine from the UK,” said head buyer Dawn Davies, who has slowly build the Champagne portfolio to become one of the largest available online since joining the business three years ago.
A key focus of the show would be to educate consumers, she added.
“We want consumers to understand why you pay more for Champagne by explaining the history behind it, the terroir, the time it takes to make it and the cost involved in the process,” she said
In addition, Davies said there would be a focus on on-trade operators and what their champagne offering should include.
“We want to revive the category, just like Cognac, and the Champagne show is the first step where we can showcase this wonderful category,” said Davies.
The first Champagne Show will take place at the Oxo Tower 2 November 2018.
