The week that was

Published:  22 June, 2018

In case you missed some of the headlines this week on harpers.co.uk, here’s a review of the top online news, analysis, opinions and features.

Top stories: There was a bit of an Italian theme running through our stories this week, courtesy of the annual Bellavita expo, which returned to London for three days.

One of the show’s highlights was the ISWA award for the UK’s best sommelier, celebrating the most talented and dedicated ambassadors for Italian wine in the UK.

There was also much talk about the incredible value and diversity coming out of Italy at the moment, while the Prosecco juggernaut continues to account for, in many cases, 50% of Italian sales.

Elsewhere Jascots and Red Squirrel both buoyed their buying teams.

And Plumpton College announced a partnership with the Sparkling Wine World Championship (CSWWC) and Nyetimber to highlight light strike (or Goût de Lumière), when wine is damaged by chemical reactions resulting from exposure to ultraviolet and visible light.

Analysis and Insights: This week we brought you a report from Harpers’ very own London Wine Fair industry briefing on the evolving role of the agent in a fast-changing world.

Read our summary of the event where a cross-trade panel of experts sparked lively debate.

And as the trend for colourful and flavoured spirits continues, we looked at the plethora of pink products flooding the market and asked whether ‘Pink’ is becoming a sub-category of its own.

People and Opinion:
This week’s meet the buyers series continued with Shaun Healy, wine director at LWC Drinks.

Following on the theme of top on-trade suppliers, we caught up with Healy to talk formative wine trade experiences, learning on the job and how things have changed since he joined LWC 2004.
