Low alcohol brewing company announces initial release

Published:  14 November, 2016

Big Drop Brewing Co., the UK's "first" brewing company dedicated to making <0.5% ABV beer, is about to launch its first beer.

Created in Bermondsey, Big Drop Chocolate Milk Stout will be the first release from Big Drop Brewing Co., by brewer Johnny Clayton.

The initial plan was to create a zero-alcohol beer, but the decision was later made to create a beer under 0.5% ABV because of the detrimental effect that processes used to remove the alcohol (such as heating or reverse osmosis) can have on the flavour and character of the beer.

According to the company, keeping the alcohol level under 0.5% keeps the character and flavour of the beer intact while managing the alcohol level through the malts used and treatment of the yeasts.

Founder Rob Fink's vision for the brewery came about in 2015 following a "once in a decade binge" that ended badly.

A period of abstinence followed, when he indentified a lack of choice when it came to alcohol-free and low alcohol beers of high quality - particularly with dark beers.

"It is clear that there is increasing demand for a better choice of low and no alcohol beers. As someone who previously struggled to find an enjoyable low alcohol beer I am happy to be able to bring something new to the market, which is also made in London," Fink said.

Big Drop Chocolate Milk Stout is available in 330ml bottles from Dry Drinker at an RRP of £2.49 (based on a case of 12 or 24 bottles).
